Whether you’re wearing Invisalign, Clear Correct, or another brand of clear orthodontic aligners, you want to make sure you’re keeping them clean every day. Otherwise, they can accumulate food debris and stains. The last thing you want is an increased risk of tooth decay or discoloration across your smile.
Here are some easy tips to follow to keep your clear aligners clean (and your teeth brighter, too!)
Rinse Your Mouth and Aligners Routinely—Especially after you eat lunch or snack, when you’re probably not brushing your teeth. Rinsing doesn’t replace brushing, but it’s great for a mid-day boost if you know you have something in your mouth.
Use a Non-Abrasive Cleanser—Make sure you’re thoroughly brushing the inside and outside of your aligners at least twice a day. You can use toothpaste if you like, so long as it’s not abrasive. Harsh toothpastes or baking soda can scratch your aligners, making them more susceptible to accumulating buildup throughout the day. If you can, soak your trays in an effervescent cleansing solution at least once a week to loosen any heavier buildup.
Don’t Drink or Eat Anything with Aligners in Your Mouth—Except water, that is. Dark liquids can trap stain under your tray. Plus, food debris can get stuck between your teeth and aligners, leading to an increase in plaque, decay, stain, and bad breath.
Store Your Aligners Properly—If you’re taking your trays out for some reason, store them in a hard case and in a cool area. Never keep them in the car or where they could get too hot.
