Is it time for your child to see an orthodontist? General dentists, pediatric dentists, and orthodontists all agree children should have an orthodontic evaluation by around the age of 7.
Why age 7? Because at this point in your child’s oral development, they’ll have a combination of both primary (baby) and permanent (adult) teeth. Since we can see where teeth are coming out and growing in, we’re better able to evaluate the placement and alignment in their developing adult smile.
Early evaluations make it possible for Dr. Kincer to intercept developmental issues through modified growth techniques. For instance, if your child loses a tooth too early, we can create extra space in that area so that the permanent tooth doesn’t become impacted. Or if they have a narrow arch, we can help widen it as their mouth grows to create room for larger adult teeth.
Since early intervention helps your child’s smile develop in a healthier manner, early orthodontic screenings actually lessen your child’s likelihood of needing major orthodontic treatment later on. We can potentially encourage a healthier growth pattern while they’re still young. Then once all of their adult teeth have erupted, Dr. Kincer can fine-tune their tooth placement with Phase II braces.
