Now that the weather is turning warm, we almost instinctively start reaching for those summertime favorites to help keep us cool. And whether you’re 12 or 42 and in braces, knowing which foods are safe for orthodontic appliances can help you keep your smile out of trouble.
Here are a few favorites that are safe, as long as you’re careful!
Watermelon
Seedless watermelon that’s cut up into bite-size pieces is a great, healthy snack. Plus, it’s packed with fiber. As long as you’re not biting down into big pieces and the melon is fully ripe, you should be fine.
Snow Cones
Even though they’re loaded with sugar, it’s ok to indulge every now and then. Just take care to rinse your mouth out afterward and brush your teeth. The cold could make metal appliances zing with sensitivity, so try not to hold it in your mouth for very long. A snow cone is probably easier for you to eat than something like an ice cream sandwich.
Banana Pudding
Ripe bananas, pudding, and vanilla wafers drenched in cream. Your mouth is probably watering just thinking about it. Since banana pudding is so soft, it’s easy to eat without having to worry about displacing an orthodontic wire.
Sliced Cucumbers and Dip
Instead of crunchy chips or hard carrots, slice up a cucumber and enjoy your favorite dip. That way you can still snack during parties and shave off a few calories too (that way you can have more dip!)
