Can I Get Braces If I Have a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are a fantastic solution for replacing missing teeth, providing a natural look and long-lasting durability. However, if you’re considering orthodontic treatment like braces after getting a dental implant, you may wonder if the two procedures are compatible. At Kincer Orthodontics in Marietta, we’ve helped many patients with dental implants achieve straighter smiles. Let’s explore how braces and dental implants can work together to align your teeth.

Understanding Dental Implants and Braces

A dental implant consists of a titanium post anchored to the jawbone, serving as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth. Unlike natural teeth, dental implants are fixed in place and don’t move. Braces, on the other hand, apply pressure to teeth to gradually shift them into alignment.

The key question for patients is whether the immobility of a dental implant poses a problem for orthodontic treatment. The answer? Not necessarily! While dental implants themselves don’t move, braces can still shift your natural teeth around the implant, allowing for a beautifully aligned smile.

When Braces and Dental Implants Work Together

Here are some scenarios where braces and dental implants can coexist:

1. Timing is Key

If possible, orthodontic treatment is best completed before placing a dental implant. This allows your orthodontist to freely adjust the alignment of your natural teeth and ensure the implant fits perfectly into your overall bite.

2. Working Around the Implant

If you already have a dental implant, braces can still adjust the surrounding teeth to improve alignment and bite function. Your orthodontist will create a personalized treatment plan that takes the fixed position of the implant into account.

3. Multi-Phase Treatment

In some cases, patients may require a dental implant after their orthodontic treatment. For example, braces can create the ideal space for a future implant by aligning the surrounding teeth.

Challenges of Combining Braces and Implants

While braces and implants can work together, there are some considerations to keep in mind:

  • Fixed Nature of Implants: Since implants can’t move, they might limit the degree of adjustment possible in certain areas. However, a skilled orthodontist can still achieve significant improvements.
  • Customized Treatment Plans: Each patient’s situation is unique, requiring a tailored approach to balance the immobility of the implant with the movement of natural teeth.
  • Bite Adjustments: Ensuring that the bite remains functional and balanced is crucial when orthodontics and implants are combined.

Orthodontic Options for Patients with Implants

At Kincer Orthodontics, we offer a variety of orthodontic solutions that can be customized for patients with dental implants:

  • Traditional Braces: Metal or ceramic braces are effective at shifting natural teeth around the fixed implant for optimal alignment.
  • Clear Aligners: Clear aligner systems like Invisalign® are a great option for patients with dental implants, offering precision and flexibility in movement.
  • Hybrid Approaches: In some cases, a combination of braces and aligners may be used to achieve the desired results.

  • We are beyond thankful for Dr. Kincer and his team!! Dr. Kincer is one of the most honest and conservative Orthodontist, which is a VERY rare find in the industry. We moved to south Florida about halfway through our treatment of 18 months and did not switch orthodontists; that’s how much Dr. Kincer means to us! Our daughter’s smile is absolutely beautiful!!

  • Dr. Kincer is the BEST at what he does!!! Both of my girls have been under Dr. Kincer's care, with exceptional results. They both began treatment at age 8, because of their tiny mouths that required Phase I and Phase II treatments. As a result of his recommended treatment plan, our girls will have exceptional teeth for life. Our family is incredibly thankful for Dr. Kincer's meticulous care that resulted in BEAUTIFUL smiles!!!

  • Dr. Kincer is the best. I am almost a year into my treatment and i have nothing but great things to say. He is so kind and his team is amazing. They are simply amazing and truly care for what their customers need and what their teeth need. I highly recommend Doctor Kincer to anyone looking for orthodontics.

  • Excellent orthodontist. Invisalign was the best money I ever spent on myself. Dr. Kincer is meticulous, thorough, has attention to detail, and fixed my flared teeth. Everyone is always complimenting my smile. He is always timely, professional, and his support staff (Jennifer and Lynn) are really caring. He is able to shave down teeth to make them aesthetically fit my smile and proportions. Dr. Kincer and Lynn really make sure their patients are comfortable-- especially when it comes down to removing attachments for invisalign and IPR, when your teeth are already sensitive. I recommended him to my brother and little cousin for orthodontic work and for their retainers :)
