One of the great things about having a good general dentist is the fact that they’re always keeping a close eye on your oral health. When the time comes, they seek the assistance of dental specialists, like our orthodontist in Marietta, GA.
The First Orthodontic Consultation
Typically, around the age of 13 your dentist will refer your child for their first consultation. At this point all permanent teeth will be in (with the exception of the third molars), and if necessary, braces treatment can begin.
Early Intervention
While 13 is a great age to start braces, your child may require early intervention. Having a consultation done at around the age of seven is recommended. During this stage, your child’s permanent teeth begin to come in and we’ll be able to check for dental or facial developmental problems.
If issues are found, we can intervene by starting the first phase of orthodontics. Phase one ortho takes advantage of your child’s growing mouth and coaxes their anatomy to start developing on the right track.
Since phase one ortho is done while your child still has primary teeth, it will not correct issues for the long term. The youngster will need to go through a second phase of braces once all of their permanent teeth have come in. However, since braces will have already been done, phase two will not be as long a treatment as it typically is.
